Why DoorDash drivers overpay taxes
DoorDash reports your gross earnings on a 1099-NEC. That number is what the IRS expects you to report. What DoorDash does NOT do is track your deductible miles โ the single biggest write-off on your return.
Miles that count
- Driving to the restaurant for a pickup (even without an accepted order, if you\'re logged in searching).
- Restaurant โ customer delivery miles.
- Driving home after a delivery ONLY if you're still logged in.
- Miles to gas up your car for Dashing (if your next action is Dashing).
Tracking apps vs manual
Top free/cheap mileage trackers: Stride (free), Hurdlr (free tier), Everlance (free tier 30 trips/month), MileIQ ($6/mo unlimited). DoorDash's own mileage tracker is new and only tracks with-order miles โ it undercounts.
Other DoorDash deductions
- Hot bag, insulated catering bag, cup carriers
- Phone chargers, car chargers, dash mount
- Portion of health insurance if self-employed (line 17 Schedule 1)
- Retirement contributions (SEP IRA or Solo 401k) โ huge deduction for high earners
- Tax software, accountant fees for your business return
